Joe Overstreet Road
Even though Joe Overstreet Road is not far from many of the other birding spots in Florida that we visit, it has a unique set of birds that are not common in the other areas…
Along the side of Canoe Creek Rd there were a pair of Cara Caras eating some sort of roadkill
As cars drove by, one of the Cara Caras took off with a mouthful
Soon after that, the other Cara Cara took off the other direction

Cara Cara flying off
The first Cara Cara then started to fly right towards us

Red Shouldered Hawk waiting on a fence post for breakfast to move below it
Eastern Meadowlark singing away on a fence
Burrowing Owls watching cars go past
Burrowing Owls are very curious little owls. They watch everything, often with amusement
Another Meadowlark singing away
Baby Great Horned Owl with mom sitting right there in the shadows
Great Horned Owlet looking around
Take a bow!
The owlet is looking intensely at mom
And now looking intensely at me
Mom Great Horned Owl is getting sleepy
Over at the lake, the Osprey were making fish and stick runs

Feeding time for the baby eaglet
Just a little piece of fish at a time
Baby Eaglet getting bigger
Lynn spotted this dead Water Moccasin that someone put on a fence post
The Owlet was awake and watching over the nest area
But it wasn’t awake for long. Nap time comes often for baby birds, especially owls

Burrowing Owl looking skyward
This wasn’t actually at Joe Overstreet. It’s a Florida Scrub Jay at Helen and Alan Crusiank Sanctuary.

Joe Overstreet Road is worth the drive to get there. Paying attention not just along the road to the lake past the farms, but also along Canoe Creek Road on the way in can be a very rewarding wildlife experience!
