St Augustine Alligator Farm

While we were in St Augustine on vacation, we stopped by the St Augustine Alligator Farm. I hadn’t been there in years (I was probably 10 the last time) and Lynn had never been. It’s a cool place that is not the tourist trap that you would think. They have a lot of birds that come and go along with the name sake alligators and such. Its very well run and maintained not to mention a fun day trip destination…

A Little Blue Heron sunning in the morning

There was a lot of nest building with the Little Blue Herons flying in and out

After a big breakfast, it was nap time for the baby Spoonbill

Cattle Egret on the move. Note the breeding colors on a lot of the birds. It’s very vibrant and colorful

Light blue colored eggs of the Great White Egret

More Great White Egret babies

Great White Egret babies waiting for food to be brought back

Cattle Egret climbing up to a higher spot

That is one funny look on a Cattle Egret, not to mention the wild hairdo!

The baby Great White Egret siblings

With mama back, the baby Great White Egrets started to battle for first position to get fed

You can see the dinosaur ancestry in the look of the baby Great White Egrets

Now those are some funky choppers!…

I should have taken a photo of the sign by this guy since I can’t remember what kind he is. He’s really cool looking with a long, skinny jaw and a lot of funky teeth…

Here’s the side view

Male Wood Ducks swimming around

This is a huge Condor. It’s wingspan is up to 10 feet!

Even though Condors are scavengers, I don’t like the look it’s giving me

A Grey Crowned Crane

Little Blue Heron tending to its eggs

Some hungry baby Roseate Spoonbills

Great White Egret babies still waiting for food to arrive

Now that’s a serious look

Tri-colored Heron flying away

The “Worlds Deadliest Bird”, the Southern Cassowary. Besides its dinosaur like appearance, it has a claw on each foot similar to a velociraptors. When threatened, it will use that claw to gut an attacker.

If you see a Southern Cassowary staring at you like this, and its not behind a fence, you’re in trouble

The St Augustine Alligator Farm is a fun, very well run zoo that is worth the low admission price to visit when in the St Augustine area. Lots of birds and other wildlife that you can actually get pretty close to. My 600mm lens was almost too much for a lot of it. If you have a regular camera/lens or even just an iPhone you can get some decent photos of wildlife here.
