Chinsegut WMA

We visited another wildlife management area that we had never been to before, Chinsegut Wildlife Managment Area. It’s managed by the Florida Wildlife Commission and only open officially on Fridays and Saturdays. The rest of the week you have to park on the road and walk in. It was a great place for small birds and especially Woodpeckers!

We were greeted near the parking lot by a Red Headed Woodpecker

This female Indigo Bunting was harder to see than it looks in this photo. She’s not a big bird and blended in to the dead tree

The Indigo Bunting does more of a “missile” dive with its wings tucked in as she headed towards the brush below.

A Pileated Woodpecker had the high ground, but was still scared off when the smaller Red-headed Woodpecker flew in

The Red-headed Woodpecker found a large bug for breakfast

The Red-headed Woodpecker flew above us with its “breakfast bug”

Even though Chinsegut WMA is not far from our house, we had never heard of it until recently. It’s a great place for birding and hiking. We’ll definitely be going back!
